Fire on Top Floor of Apartment Building

The Forbes Building in Jamaica Plain, Mass. houses mostly elderly residents

At least three apartments burned and one person was hospitalized after a 2-alarm blaze tore through a large apartment building in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, on Monday afternoon.

Someone's careless disposal of smoking material sparked the fire at the Forbes Building at 545 Centre St., fire investigators have determined.

The 147-unit apartment building houses mostly elderly residents. It was unclear exactly how many apartments were affected.

One person who lived in the apartment where the fire first sparked was treated and transported to Beth Israel for smoke inhalation.

A hydrant in the rear of the building was shoveled out but was frozen, so a feeder was run to the street from the rear, Boston fire officials say.

The chief estimated the loss at $100,000.
