Authorities Link Gun Shop Thefts in Mass., NH

Authorities in Massachusetts say the theft is linked to a similar crime in New Hampshire

Tyngsborough police say the town's only gun shop may be the latest target in what could be a weapons burglary spree.

Chief Rich Howe says the public is not in any danger. They believe the suspects smashed through the front door at Hitman Firearms and stole weapons in order to sell them for cash not necessarily to use them.

Monday morning at about 3:30 police say several suspects shattered the front door, made their way into Hitman Firearms, destroyed the cases and escaped with four handguns before police responded to the security alarm.

"For the most part they smashed through everything," said Hitman Manager John Comer. "Seeing what happened, you do get worried."

What's more worrisome is that police say this crime was likely carried out by the same people seen in surveillance video from February 3rd. Police in Hooksett, New Hampshire say the suspects stole four guns from a store called Wicked Weaponry.

"It's the time of the night and how it was done, we have good reason to believe it was done by the same people," said Chief Howe.

Ashley Lyons owns the Consignment Boutique in the same building as the Hitman Firearms.

"It's surprising to me, it's terrifying," Lyons said.

She says she picked that spot for her new business knowing that the gun shop was there and owned by a Tyngsborough Police officer.

"It's the reason why I got this spot, I figured this was a safe place," she said.

Comer understands her concern. As a man who offers gun safety courses, he says a crime like this is everything he's trying to avoid.

"I am going to lose a lot of sleep," Comer said Tuesday. "We work had to keep guns out of criminals hands and make sure the wrong people don't get them."

Hitman did not have working surveillance cameras at the time of the crime, but Comer says the system is up and running right now.

Police say they're reviewing surveillance video from other businesses in plaza.
