Firefighter Injured Battling 2-Alarm Blaze

He reportedly fell off a roof while fighting the fire

It was a scary scene at a two-alarm apartment fire in Norwood, Massachusetts, Friday afternoon as a firefighter fell from the roof of the three-story building at 802 Norwest Drive.

The unidentified five-year veteran of the department was immediately aided by his fellow firefighters on the ground, before being transported in an ambulance and then med-flighted to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Norwood Fire Lieutenant George Morrice said, "The individual is stable, he's in a Boston hospital, the chief of the department and his family is in the hospital with him."

Lt. Morrice says his injuries are non-life-threatening.

Norwood Town General Manager John Carroll says the firefighter landed on his feet and has four broken bones in his right foot, but not a broken back as was originally feared.

Lt. Morrice says he was ventilating the roof to help crews get water on the flames, when he apparently slid down one of the sloped sections."It is a very difficult building, that's part of the job," he said, "many different types of construction out there but because of the peaked roof and the slopes on it makes ventilation of the building for the fire a little more difficult."

Property management says they are thankful no one else was injured, but their thoughts are with the firefighter recovering in the hospital.

Chestnut Hill Realty Vice President David Risko said, "Ultimately when you hear that kind of stuff it's tragic, because he's out here really just trying to solve this particular problem…and certainly our prayers are with him and his family."
