Firefighters Rescue Girl Who Fell Through Ice in Southington

Southington firefighters rescued a teenage girl who fell through the ice Saturday afternoon.

Crews responded to the area of Meriden Avenue and South End Road after receiving reports of a person through the ice.

A girl who is about 14 years old was trying to cross a pond when she fell through thin ice while she was with a group of people. She got stuck in ice, water and mud just past her waist. Firefighters had to extract her from the water. The people the girl was with called police.

Paramedics medically evaluated the girl and she's expected to be fine.

Fire officials said that going on ice is not advisable in this weather because it's hard to judge the thickness.

"Key point to remember is especially with our current weather conditions where experiencing in the area, you cannot assume any body of water and the ice on top of it is safe to traverse across," Capt. Eric Heath, of the Southington Fire Department, said.

The scene has been cleared.
