Flags Ordered to Half Staff for Slain Journalist

NH Gov. Hassan made the call to honor James Wright Foley on the day of his memorial service

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan has ordered flags to be held at half-staff in honor of slain journalist James Wright Foley on the day of his memorial service.

Foley was beheaded and the video was posted on YouTube by ISIS, who claimed responsibility for the photographer's death.

"James Foley exemplified the best of our journalistic ideals, fearlessly going to some of the world's most dangerous places to expose the horrific consequences of war and the beautiful humanity of those innocent civilians affected by it," wrote Gov. Hassan in a statement.

The New Hampshire native's family still lives in Rochester, where the mass will be held in his memory Sunday.

In an appearance on NBC's "Today" show, John Foley said he and his wife, Diane, had hoped they could negotiate with ISIS for their son's life.

"As Granite Staters and people around the world mourn, our thoughts and prayers remain with the Foley family and their loved ones," Gov. Hassan added in her statement.
