Fire Captain Critically Injured in Massive Triple-Decker Fire in Providence, Rhode Island

A fire captain was critically injured and at least 11 other firefighters were hurt battling a massive blaze Thursday in Providence, Rhode Island.

The fire engulfed a triple-decker at 39 Eaton St. in the Elmhurst section of the city, according to necn affiliate WJAR. Flames also spread to at least two neighboring buildings due to the windy conditions.

Captain Joseph Fontaine was first taken to Roger Williams Hospital, then transported to Rhode Island Hospital. He is in critical condition.

Fontaine was initially hospitalized with a leg injury, but according to WJAR, his vital signs crashed while he was there. He received treatment for respiratory issues and smoke inhalation.

Providence College said its students do live in houses on either side, but the house where the fire started was not occupied by any students.

In a statement, the school said none of its students were injured, but that it would help any students find alternate housing if they are displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but arson is not suspected.
