A 67-year-old, disturbed man from York, Maine is in custody and facing multiple charges after crashing his car during a police pursuit on Monday evening in Reading, Massachusetts.
According to the North Reading Police Chief, the department received multiple 911 calls at 6:30 p.m. about a man acting strangely and irrationally in a car that was stopped in the intersection of Rt. 28 (Main Street) and Rt. 62, causing traffic to be stopped.
When police arrived they found the suspect exhibiting bizarre behavior inside a 2009 Nissan Maxima. He was screaming and pulling his hair.
Before the officers could take action, he drove off, resulting in a police pursuit that went on for about 1.2 miles.
The suspect drove erratically, swerving across the road, narrowly missing several utility poles before he sped up, veered off the road and crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of Rt. 28 (Main Street) and Franklin Street.
The suspect's vehicle flipped and caught on fire.
He was rescued and taken to an area hospital by the Reading Fire Department.
