Floor Collapses, Trapping Man in Pit Under House in Topsfield, Massachusetts

A man was rescued out of a pit beneath his house in Topsfield, Massachusetts, after his floor collapsed beneath him.

Fire crews responded Monday evening to the Hill Street home, where the victim had fallen into a hole about 12 feet deep.

In an effort to replace a floorboard, the man took a sledgehammer to the ground. But according to fire officials, he had no idea there was an empty, unused basement beneath him.

Crews were able to rescue him. He was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

Officials say the basement attachment was likely built in the 1970s. The building was not up to code.

Topsfield Fire advises people looking to make alterations to their homes to have professionals evaluate any potential risks first.
