Foggy Morning Start, Temps to Increase in Coming Days

We have a mild, muggy start for most of New England. The wave of the pressure that came in Tuesday with scattered downpours and high humidity has slowed down over the Gulf of Maine Wednesday morning.

In its wake, we still have some rain in eastern Maine and plenty of fog around the coast and southeastern New England. Areas that had the rain first Tuesday get the sun first Wednesday.

Along and west of the Connecticut River, we warm to 85 to 90 degrees in the afternoon. But along the coast from Cape Cod to Maine, temperatures will be in the 60s to low 70s and even in the upper 50s in downeast Maine. The sun should come out for most of us, though it will be a struggle at the eastern most beaches, where low clouds and fog may linger.

Our wind is light, variable and locally onshore. In addition, there is a weak trough of low pressure igniting a few scattered showers and thunderstorms possibly Wednesday afternoon, especially in western New England toward sunset.

Slightly less humid air will come in Thursday, but we will still have fog to burn off early. Afterwards, it will be partly to mostly sunny with a high temperature in the 80s and a chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm west and north.

The next front from southern Canada gets close to us Friday, but high pressure is strong to our south and the combination will create more of a wind from the southwest, with warm to hot weather in New England.

For some cities that have not reached 90 degrees yet, this may be the day for it. But also the chance for thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening.

That front will stall over New England this weekend and then a push very cold air aloft is pushing Sunday. That means we have a lot of clouds this weekend and a chance for a shower thunderstorm on Saturday, and a chance for strong to severe thunderstorms Saturday night and Sunday.

We have many fireworks scheduled this weekend, but it's too early to make the call for postponing or moving times just yet. Temperatures will be in the 80s Saturday and in the 70s to 80 Sunday.

Our First Alert 10-Day Forecast goes out to Independence Day. It looks like a classic summer week with sun and clouds, and chance of afternoon or evening thunderstorms. High temperature near 80 degrees into July 4.
