Fundraising Kicking Off for Station Fire Memorial Park

May begins a month-long effort by faith communities across Rhode Island to help raise the funds needed to complete Station Fire Memorial Park in West Warwick, Rhode Island.

WJAR-TV reports the Station Fire Memorial Foundation is approximately $300,000 short of the $2 million required to open the park honoring the victims of a 2003 fire at The Station nightclub.

If the foundation reaches its fundraising goal by the end of the month, the park will be opened in the fall. Officials say more than 500 congregations of varying religious denominations are participating in the May fundraising campaign.

Organizations will take up second collections, host events and sponsor raffles to support the foundation. Campaign director Dan Barry says the unity among the various faith communities is "historic."
