Gabby Giffords Headlining Michaud Fundraiser in Maine

Former U.S. rep. shot in the head in Ariz. attack is campaigning for gubernatorial candidate

Former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords is in Maine to help raise money for gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud.

Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, are headlining a fundraiser Saturday in Kennebunkport for the Democrat hoping to unseat Republican Gov. Paul LePage.

Michaud says he and Giffords became close friends as conservative "blue dog" Democrats in Congress.

Giffords has become a leading force in the push for tougher gun laws since she was shot in the head in a 2011 attack in Tucson, Arizona, that killed six people and left 13 wounded.

Giffords and Kelly are also planning to meet privately with Republican former President George H. W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, at their nearby compound. Kelly and Bush's friendship began when both were based in Houston.
