Gala Celebrates Sen. Kennedy on Eve of Institute's Dedication

Scores of politicians and guests arrived Sunday night at a gala kicking off festivities for the grand opening of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and Ted Kennedy's nephew, Congressman Joe Kennedy III, were among the high-profile guests.

"A really exciting evening. They've done a tremendous job setting up the institute," said Rep. Kennedy. "It's a wonderful legacy for my uncle and I think, more than anything, a testament to the faith that he had in government and will be a tremendous asset for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and our country.”

Also in the crowd was Andy Card, former Chief of Staff under George W. Bush.

"Sen. Kennedy and I had a wonderful, constructive relationship," said Card. "Even though we didn't share the same philosophy or the same party, we worked together to solve problems, and I was proud to work with him.”

Republicans and Democrats are taking part as the institute prepares to open its doors to the public on Tuesday. The facility includes a life-size replica of the U.S. Senate and Sen. Kennedy's office.

It will be a place where visitors learn how the Senate works.

Visitors will be able to debate, negotiate and vote on legislation as they learn how bills are passed.
