One thousand trout have a new home in Jamaica Pond thanks to the efforts of Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, state environmental officials and local schoolchildren.
Wednesday's annual spring restocking is one of several that occur during the year at Boston's largest freshwater pond.
The 800 rainbow trout, 50 brook trout, 50 brown trout and 100 tiger trout were trucked in from state hatcheries in Belchertown and Sandwich, where they were raised.
An enthusiastic Baker waded into the pond several times with a bucket of trout and tossed the fish into the shallow waters. He was helped by second-graders from the John F. Kennedy Elementary School.
The pond, home to other species such as largemouth bass, chain pickerel and yellow perch, is open to fishermen with valid Massachusetts fishing licenses.
