A Massachusetts state trooper accused of assaulting his girlfriend has been handed down a grand jury indictment, according to the Middlesex District Attorney.
Trooper Robert Sundberg, a 14-year veteran, was arraigned in April on charges of attempted strangulation and domestic abuse.
He now faces several charges, including two counts of rape, assault with intent to rape, three counts of assault and battery, strangulation, five counts of assault and battery on a household or family member, stalking, and malicious destruction of a motor vehicle.
Police say the trooper restrained and choked the woman at their Boxborough apartment. Police say the woman waited until Sundberg fell asleep, then fled.
Sundberg's attorney says there were no visible marks on the woman and she made up the assault because Sundberg wanted to end their relationship.
Sundberg has been relieved of duty and his department-issued weapons and other equipment have been confiscated pending the outcome of the case. He has also been suspended without pay indefinitely.
He was released on bail and ordered to remain on GPS monitoring following a dangerousness hearing.
