Heavy Rain, Flooding Likely on Tuesday

Periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms are on the way for Tuesday.

The rain will arrive around 7 a.m. in Western New England, including parts of Connecticut, the Berkshires, and parts of Vermont. Throughout the morning the showers and downpours will spread east, reaching Worcester and Boston between mid-morning and lunchtime. Maine will be last to see the rain move in, so there much of the morning will be dry.

While there will be some impact to the morning commute in Western New England, the rain will have the biggest impact on the evening commute. At that time widespread downpours and storms will be hitting most of our major highways. Because the rain will fall at such a fast clip, localized flooding is likely at times Tuesday afternoon. Some road or lane closures are likely. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for parts of Southwestern Connecticut and the New York City area just for that reason.

The rain will become a little bit less steady by the evening hours, but hit and miss showers and downpours will still continue, especially in Maine.

It will also be muggy and windy during the day.

We'll dry out by Wednesday morning, but a secondary disturbance will likely pop off a few more showers or storms during the day.

Between the widespread heavy rain we see on Tuesday, and the left over showers for Wednesday, most towns will likely come away with 1-3" of rain. Isolated higher amounts are possible in highly localized areas hit by numerous rounds of downpours.

This is still needed rain, as parts of Southern Connecticut, Southern Rhode Island, and Southern Maine remain in moderate drought. Other areas of New England remain classified as abnormally dry, with annual rainfall deficits approaching 5-10" in some places.
