After a cloudy, cool and showery start to our Friday in southeastern New England, we finally saw breaks in the cloud cover by the evening commute. The rest of New England saw a mix of sun and clouds and at times more sunshine than clouds, which allowed temperatures to soar into the mid to upper 60s in northwestern New England. Even Presque Isle, Maine, reached into the lower 60s Friday. That's all about to change as we cross over into the weekend.
Overnight Friday, we'll see the onset of clouds building in ahead of the system that slides in late Saturday into early Sunday, bringing heavy downpours and gusty winds. Temperatures slip into the mid to upper 40s.
For Saturday, we start off dry under mostly cloudy skies with highs into the 50s. The leading edge of showers reach into southwestern New England, including Connecticut and western Massachusetts by noon. The rain continues through Saturday afternoon and then extends into Worcester and Rhode Island by 5 p.m., continuing its path north and eastward through the evening and overnight hours. The heaviest of the rainfall occurs Saturday night into Sunday morning along the southern coastline and southeastern Massachusetts. As the coastal storm is also being deemed a nor'easter as it paves its way along the coastline, it will not only bring heavy rainfall, but also gusty winds out of the northeast, with some gusts in excess of 40 to 50 mph, especially for our coastal communities.
As the track of the system slides up into the Gulf of Maine, we'll be on the backside of the storm and the heavy downpours will become lighter by Sunday evening for southern New England. Northern New England will likely still be dealing with heavy downpours especially along Downeast Maine. Lingering scattered showers extend into Sunday night into Monday morning before we dry out for the second half of Monday.
It's likely we will see between one to two (higher amounts in localized areas possible) of rainfall through Monday morning with a chance for some rain to change over to snow into the higher elevations of New Hampshire and northern Vermont.
All and all, for this Mother's Day weekend, a dry start Saturday with highs in the low to mid 50s before the rain moves in by Saturday afternoon and evening, starting in southwestern New England and spreading northeast. Mother's Day Sunday is cool, dreary and windy with windswept rain and highs near 50.
However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. This nor'easter that lands on Mother's Day weekend will break up the unseasonably cool pattern we’ve been dealing with over the last week, and will allow warmer air to move in with upper 60s as early as Tuesday and near 80 as early as Thursday.
