The MBTA is saying goodbye to the so-called "honor box" payment system at unstaffed T parking lots and urging customers to take a more modern approach.
Starting Monday, commuters will no longer have the old-fashioned option of paying for parking at stations by folding up dollars bills and stuffing them into tiny slots.
The T says about 75 percent of customers already use PaybyPhone, which allows payment of parking fees on mobile phones or other Internet-connected devices. They're urging cash customers to sign up for this method as well, or consider purchasing a monthly parking pass.
Customers can also choose to receive a monthly invoice in the mail, with an additional 50 cents added to parking fees.
The change does not apply to MBTA parking garages or stations where there are parking attendants.
