Hospital Sending Medical Supplies to Liberia to Combat Ebola

UMass Memorial Health Care is sending $12,000 worth of supplies from local medical equipment vendors

Gloves, masks, and gowns are simple but necessary medical equipment. On Friday, UMass Memorial Health Care is shipping 2,500 pounds of supplies to Liberia.

UMass Medical School co-director of global health Donna Gallagher says she and others from UMass have been to Liberia dozens of times. While they don't currently have any faculty members there, they know many who are providing care.

The Ebola outbreak has killed more than 1,000 people in West Africa. Gallagher says care providers are contracting Ebola from the patients they treat.

UMass arranged the $12,000 worth of supplies from local medical equipment vendors. Gallagher says the need is crucial.

UMass Medical School is working with the Liberian Ministry of Health. Supplies are scheduled to arrive there early next week. Gallagher hopes the equipment will help their friends who are trying to treat the disease.
