Humidity to Give Way to Cold Front

Humidity has also increased today and will continue to rise the next couple of days

Despite the abundant cloud cover south today, temperatures still hit the 70s for most. Humidity has also increased today and will continue to rise the next couple of days.

The wind shifts Sunday and southwest winds drive warm, moist air into New England. Temperatures hit the 80s for most and dew point temperatures will be into the low 70s. That’s some humid air! This level of moisture is enough for daytime heating to fire off thunderstorms, and Northwest New England may see some isolated severe cells Sunday. Father’s Day is quiet for most though, but Monday is another story.

A cold front approaches through the day on Monday, continuing to drive warmth and moisture from the south into New England. The setup is very favorable for thunderstorms and most of New England is under the threat of severe thunderstorm development Monday (see photo). Severe cells will be widespread in Western Massachusetts, Southern Vermont, and Northwestern Connecticut with the severe threats being damaging wind gusts and marginally severe hail.

The storms lose steam as they truck east as the sun goes down and the front fizzles, but there will be plenty of residual moisture Tuesday to fire off additional afternoon storms with daytime heating.
