Hundreds Doused with Ice Water at Walk of Hope for ALS

Annual walk in Wakefield, Mass. supports Angel Fund, which hopes to raise $4 million for ALS research

The family of Pauline Zammuto taking part in annual The Walk of Hope for ALS in Wakefield, Massachusetts, only two weeks after the 50-year-old mother of five lost her life to the deadly disease.

The annual walk around Lake Quannapowitt is organized by the Angel Fund, which was started nearly 20 years ago.

The Angel Fund is now looking to raise $4 million.

All of the money raised would go to research.

Of course, it wouldn't be an ALS fundraiser without an ice bucket challenge. Nearly 500 people are getting doused here on Wakefield Commons - all for a very good cause.

A chain-reaction ice bucket challenge helped everyone cool off after the 3.2-mile trek.

John Frates, whose son, Pete's, battle with ALS inspired what became an international movement, helped kick things off.

The ice bucket challenge has helped raise awareness, but some families have understood ALS for what seem like forever.

Edward Beatty died from the deadly disease in 1978.
