I-95 Rest Area Closed Temporarily Due to Suspicious Packages

State police prevented cars from entering the plaza for about an hour

The Maine State Police bomb team was called to the Kennebunk rest area off the Maine Turnpike on Friday afternoon after two suspicious packages were discovered there.

State police troopers prevented any cars from entering the plaza at Mile 25 along the southbound lanes and the plaza was temporarily evacuated. The rest area includes several restaurants and a gas station.

The plaza reopened around 3 p.m. State police said the two suspicious packages were just backpacks, one containing clothing and the other garbage. After being examined by the bomb squad, they were deemed to pose no safety threat.

The backpack with the clothing in it was found by a gas pump around 11 a.m., and the other was found in a trash can around 1 p.m.

Traffic on the turnpike was not affected.
