Police ID 2 Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-84 East in Tolland

A 65-year-old Hartford man and a 52-year-old Hartford woman are dead after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 in Tolland early Sunday morning.

State police say a Chevy Malibu, a tractor-trailer and a Honda CRV collided and closed both sides of the highway near exits 67 and 68 around 12:40 a.m.

Richard Wells, 65, of Hartford, was driving the Malibu and lost control, hit the guardrail, went back into the right lane and the tractor-trailer hit the car, according to state police.

Wells and the passenger in the Malibu, 52-year-old Carolyn Everett, of Hartford, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from state police.

The tractor-trailer driver refused medical treatment and the driver of the CRV was transported to St. Francis Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

DEEP was called to clean up 80 gallons of fuel that leaked from the tractor-trailer.

Lanes of the highway reopened by 12:30 p.m.

It is unclear what caused Wells to lose control of the vehicle he was driving.
