Police: Suspicious Man Who Approached Jogger Was Actually Good Samaritan

Police said the woman called police around 10 a.m. Tuesday

Police in Shirley, Massachusetts, say they have identified the driver of a van that stopped to offer water to a woman out running alone and determined that he meant no harm.

The woman became alarmed because Shirley is about 20 miles northeast of Princeton, where Vanessa Marcotte of New York City was killed Aug. 7 while out running near her mother's home.

Shirley Chief Thomas Goulden said Thursday the driver of the green van was concerned because the woman appeared dehydrated. He apologized for causing her fear.

Goulden says the man is a 71-year-old veteran who drives disabled people to medical appointments.

Shirley police stepped up patrols after the woman reported that she was approached at about 10 a.m. Tuesday.

There have been no arrests in Marcotte's death.
