An inmate at the Worcester County jail in Massachusetts has been sentenced to up to 16 years in state prison for an unprovoked attack on guards in 2012 that sent three of them to the hospital.
Edwin Santiago was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges including armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Prosecutors say the 36-year-old Santiago, who has a lengthy criminal record, stabbed one guard in the head and chest several times with a knife made from a piece of metal fence, spat blood and saliva at guards, and claimed he had AIDS.
Several guards were treated in the jail's infirmary and three were taken to an outside hospital.
Santiago's lawyer says his client has a history of untreated mental health issues.
