Italian Man Sues DMV for Refusing to Translate Exam

The ACLU says the DMV will only allow Danilo Saccoccio to take the exam in English, Spanish or Portuguese

An Italian immigrant is suing the Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles for refusing to translate the written driver's license exam or allow for an interpreter.

The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union on Thursday announced it had filed a federal complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of Danilo Saccoccio.

The complaint says the DMV is violating a law that requires agencies receiving federal funding to accommodate individuals with limited English proficiency. The complaint asks the DMV to accommodate Saccoccio.

The ACLU says the DMV will only allow Saccoccio to take the exam in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

Saccoccio received his green card in November and is married to an American citizen.

A message seeking comment from the DMV was not immediately returned.
