Four Maine lawmakers say they want the attorney general to sign off on a criminal investigation into allegations of abuse of power by Gov. Paul LePage.

The group includes three Democrats and one independent. They say LePage has established a pattern of abuse of power that includes the blockage of a political enemy's hiring by a private school.

    The Portland Press Herald reports
the lawmakers say the Republican governor should also be investigated for blocking voter-approved conservation projects and threatening the state's community college system.

A spokeswoman for LePage has denounced recent complaints of abuse of power by the governor as "political chicanery." The House of Representatives' Republican leadership also says it's time to put the issue "behind us."

A spokesman for Attorney General Janet Mills declined to comment.
