The sheriff of Maine's Cumberland County says he accepts "complete responsibility" for the actions of deputies who told lawyers they'd have to remove their underwire bras to meet with jailed clients.

Kevin Joyce issued the apology on Thursday. At least two attorneys say they were told they'd have to remove their bras when entering the Cumberland County Jail because they set off the metal detector. They refused to comply and left.

Joyce says he did not give deputies proper guidance about how to handle such a situation. He says in the future, deputies will resolve similar situations using a metal detecting wand.

Joyce also said that the possibility of contraband slipping into the jail is a serious concern and that is why jail workers take security scans very seriously.
