Wanting to adopt specific puppies, families knew they had to be the first in line for Clear the Shelters. Some people arrived the night before, even slept in their cars.
When the doors of the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland opened, more than 25 families were ready to adopt.
For many, the early arrival was well worth the wait, resulting in taking home their dream pet.
As the shelter clears and dogs and cats find forever homes, the staff says there's no greater sight.
"We take excellent care of them here. We love them so much, but there's nothing like seeing them leave the doors with their new family," said Jeana Roth.
