Local Gymnasts React to USOC Pulling Boston 2024 Bid

The news that Boston will not host the 2024 Olympics is disappointing for local gymnasts.

At Exxcell Gymnastics and Climbing in Newton, Massachusetts, they're not looking at it from a political or taxpayers point of view, but rather as athletes.

"I think we were really hopeful for the Olympics to be here," said Laura Fields, a gymnastics coach.

Excell is the same place where Needham native and Olympic gymnastics medalist Aly Raisman got her start.

"It only comes around every four years and for a gymnast, it's the highest goal you can get to, is to be in the Olympics," said Fields.

"Every gymnast wants to go to the Olympics. When you're little, you watch all the older girls, so it would have been cool if the Olympics were here," added gymnast Julie Schoen.

But now the girls are hoping for the next best thing, that the summer games stay in the U.S.

"I hope it will be somewhere close to home, because it would be an amazing experience to see it in person and not just on TV," said gymnast Laura Hernandez.
