MBTA Prepares for Cold Commutes This Winter

Passangers are hoping this year's winter weather does not impact their daily commutes

Plunging temperatures and snow on the way was a recipe for disaster last year for the T. This year, passengers are hoping for better and the T says it’s more prepared.

For T passengers like Jennifer Rambridge, consistent T service is critical.  She rides the Green Line from Riverside to Boston every day.

“They seem to be doing a lot better this year so I’m keeping my fingers crossed," said Rambridge.

MBTA General Manager Frank DePaola say the T is more focused this winter to deal with bitterly cold temperatures and heavy snowfall.

The T this winter has more equipment to remove snow and keep the tracks from freezing.  When the temperatures drop below 32 degrees, the T will use what they call Cold Car procedures in the overnight hours.

There were some delays across the system Tuesday morning. Some of those delays were because of winter weather, and some were not. There were unruly passengers on the green line, and brakes froze on a red line train.

With the upcoming combination of frigid temperatures and a possible snowstorm, the real test could be just ahead for the MBTA.
