Police: Man Dies After Being Struck, Trapped Under MBTA Orange Line Train

MBTA Transit Police say the man was trespassing

A man investigators say was trespassing on the Orange line train tracks at Boston’s Haymarket station when he was struck by a train has died from his injuries.

The man who is believed to be in his 40’s has not been identified.

MBTA Transit Police say they do not believe there was any foul play involved, but they did not elaborate on how the man got down on the tracks.

Power had to be cut to the third line before Boston firefighters could reach him. Officials tell us he was conscious and talking at the time.

Boston EMS transported him to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Outbound service at Haymarket Station was shut down for about an hour and a half during Wednesday evening’s commute, creating serious delays for commuters like James Martineau, who was trying to head home to Malden from Downtown Crossing.

"Pretty crowded, the train was basically shut off, everything was dark inside, they had taken everybody off the train so I got down to the station then I quickly left because it didn’t look like anybody was going anywhere anytime soon," Martineau said.

Eddie Yorke was already on a train and didn’t have the option of trying to find alternate transportation. He said he spent 25 minutes sitting on the tracks with little explanation.

"They said there’s a serious, severe medical emergency and that was it, and they just kept us sitting and waiting," Yorke said.

MBTA Transit Police detectives continue to investigate the facts and circumstances leading to this fatal incident.
