MBTA Trolley Driver Attacked by Man in Halloween Mask

The trolley operator was allegedly struck repeatedly about the head and body

At approximately 12:20 a.m. Sunday, a Mattapan Line trolley operator was assaulted at Cedar Grove Station.

The 45-year old MBTA employee told police that he was attacked by a man wearing a Halloween mask and costume.

The assailant told the operator that didn't have the money for the fare, punched the operator in the head and then pulled him off the trolley.

On the platform, the trolley operator was allegedly struck repeatedly about the head and body. The assailant fled the scene while two passengers from the trolley called for help.

The employee has been with the T for 18 months. He was transported to Carney Hospital for treatment of his injuries and released in the morning.

Acting MBTA General Manager Brian Shortsleeve condemned the attack and said assaults on T employees will not be tolerated.

In a statement, Gov. Charlie Baker called the attack senseless.

"Such a vicious and senseless violent attack on a public employee is unconscionable and intolerable and our thoughts and prayers are with the driver as he recovers. Transit Police will continue to investigate and work to find the individual responsible, who will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
