Maine Man Charged With Killing Pregnant Girlfriend Ordered Held Without Bail

33-year-old Evaristo Deus of Lewiston is accused of running down Laudrinha Kubeloso with an SUV

A Lewiston man accused of running down and killing his pregnant girlfriend before trying to flee to Haiti has been ordered held without bail.

Thirty-three-year-old Evaristo Deus made his first court appearance in Maine on Friday, two days after he was taken into custody at JFK Airport in New York City.

His girlfriend, 32-year-old Laudrinha Kubeloso, was struck from behind Tuesday by an SUV and pronounced dead at a Lewiston hospital. She was four months pregnant.

Police say Deus was removed from an airplane and detained Wednesday in New York. He waived extradition and was returned Thursday evening to Androscoggin County.
