Two accused killers in Maine are connected by a tragedy - the death of 6-month-old Larry Lord.

Prosecutors say the baby died last May from a traumatic brain injury and skull fracture.

Nine months later, Jessee Mackin of Millinocket, Maine, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the child's death. Prosecutors say at the time of Lord's death, Mackin was dating the baby's mother.

Mackin entered a not guilty plea in Bangor Friday afternoon.

"It's been a difficult time for our family," said Lord's great aunt Danette Robinson.

The family has been through more tragedy this year - the baby's biological father, Anthony Lord, was charged in a shooting rampage and manhunt through Northern Maine last July.

Police say the elder Lord kidnapped and assaulted a woman, burned down a barn, shot five people and led police on a manhunt that spanned two counties.

Two people died from their gunshot wounds.

Some have speculated that the death of his infant son caused Anthony Lord to snap and go on that rampage.

Police have not commented on that possibility.

Court documents in the Mackin case remain sealed. His next court appearance is his bail hearing on Tuesday.
