Maine Mill Releases Thousands of Gallons of Contaminated Water Into River

The state Department of Environmental Protection has been notified

Thousands of gallons of contaminated hot water were released into a Maine river on Thursday afternoon.

A spokesman for the former NewPage mill in Rumford told WCSH-TV that 15,000 gallons of water were discharged into the Androscoggin River around 2 p.m. Thursday. The water went into the town's sewer system and then into the river instead of the company's treatment system.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has been notified, but the mill said there is no danger to the general public.

Officials say the spillw ill not impact drinking water.
