Man Accused of Attacking Police Officers Inside Home

Authorities say a Massachusetts man injured officers inside of his home early Monday morning.

Thirty-one-year-old David Triggs of 48 Stearns Ave., Mansfield, faced multiple charges in Attleboro District Court during his arraignment, including five counts of assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct and malicious destruction of property.

Mansfield police say they were called to the Stearns Avenue home around 4:20 a.m. for a report of an out-of-control male after residents in the home initially locked themselves in a bedroom, but Triggs allegedly kicked it in.

Police say the residents managed to get out of the bedroom and then lock themselves inside of a car in the garage, and used the car's OnStar system to call 911.

Police say when they got to the scene, Triggs was in a chair holding a hammer in an upstairs bedroom. Triggs alleged set the hammer down when police told him to, but then fought back when police tried to speak to him.

Mansfield police say an officer was nearly knocked over the second floor banister during the melee.

Triggs was finally placed into custody after being tased multiple times, according to police.

Sgt. Brian Thibault was taken to Norwood Hospital to treat a chest and leg injury, while Officer Andrew Kelley was taken to Sturdy Hospital for head injuries and exposure to blood.

Triggs was taken back to the Mansfield Police Department after being treated for his injuries at Sturdy Hospital as well.
