Man Accused of Stealing an 85-Year-Old Woman's Purse Arrested

A man accused of stealing an 85-year-old woman's purse in Hamden last month has been arrested.

Police identified the suspect as Jeffrey Small 47, of New Haven. He is being held on $35,000 bond.

Police said they responded to the 2200 block of Dixwell Avenue at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 and learned that the victim was sitting in her car in the parking lot of 2335 Dixwell Ave. when a tall man in his 40s, since identified as Small, approached her and asked for cash, police said.

The woman reached into her purse, planning to give Small “a few dollars,” but he grabbed her purse and ran away, heading south on Dixwell Avenue, according to police.

The victim ran after Small for a little bit and found her purse on the ground, but $50 and some credit cards had been stolen.

Police said they responded to the parking lot of 2335 Dixwell Avenue on Sunday after receiving a complaint about a person aggressively approaching people and asking for money.

There, they found Small and arrested him on a warrant and brought him to police headquarters.

Small was charged with robbery in the third degree and larceny in the second degree.

Small is due back in court on April 4.
