Victim in Crash With Alleged Drunk Vt. Police Officer Dies

A Vermont police office suspended after a drunken driving charge is expected to face more serious charges now that one victim of the crash has died.

St. Albans police tell the Burlington Free Press that 74-year-old Omer Martin of St. Albans died Saturday at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Police said suspended Burlington police officer Leanne Werner now faces more serious charges when she appears in court Monday.

Authorities say the 30-year-old Werner crossed the crossed the center on Lower Newton Road in St. Albans July 12 and struck the car driven by Martin. His wife, 73-year-old Jane Martin, was injured.

Werner, of St. Albans, was off-duty at the time of the 5:15 p.m. crash. She was suspended from the force shortly after the crash.
