Man Arraigned for Near-Fatal Stabbing

Bail was set at $50,000 for 22-year-old Selvin Gonzalez-Castillo

A Pittsfield, Massachusetts, man police say inflicted near-fatal stabbing injuries on another man has been held on $50,000 bail.

Prosecutors said in Berkshire Superior Court on Wednesday that 22-year-old Selvin Gonzalez-Castillo left the 29-year-old victim of the April 23 stabbing "very close to death."

Police say the attack was "sustained and purposeful," and "intended to inflict mortal injury."

Prosecutors say the victim required 14 units of blood and several surgeries as a result of his wounds.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that Gonzalez-Castillo did not appear in court but his lawyer entered not guilty pleas on his behalf to charges including armed assault with intent to murder.

The defense attorney said there are possible identification issues in the case.
