Man Arrested in Cub Scout Donation Jar Theft

Police in Malden, Mass., say 28-year-old Kenneth Smith will be arraigned Tuesday

Three young Cub Scouts and their moms were raising money by selling popcorn outside a Stop & Shop in Malden, Massachusetts, Sunday when the thief came up from behind and grabbed a box containing $263 in funds raised.

The suspect was captured on store surveillance video and a customer's cell phone.

Monday night police announced the arrest of 28-year-old Kenneth Smith, Jr. of Cheaphacet, Rhode Island, in connection with the theft.

Malden police credit tips from the public with helping them solve this crime.

Smith is scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of larceny from a person in Malden District Court Tuesday morning.

The stolen money was not recovered, but Stop & Shop and others have stepped forward to replace it.
