A Lewiston man authorities say ran down and killed his pregnant girlfriend before trying to flee to Haiti has been returned to Maine to face a murder charge.

State and local police brought Evaristo Deus (doose) to the Androscoggin County Jail at about 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Sun Journal reports that the 33-year-old Deus is scheduled to appear in Androscoggin County Superior Court on Friday.

Deus' girlfriend, 32-year-old Laudrinha Kubeloso, was struck from behind Tuesday by an SUV and pronounced dead at the hospital. She was four months pregnant.

Deus was taken into custody by the New York Port Authority on Wednesday after boarding a plane at JFK Airport that was headed to Haiti.

His vehicle was found Wednesday morning in Portland on the University of New England campus.
