Massachusetts Man Charged With Shooting Death of Teenage Boy

Police say the victim and a friend were drinking alcohol when they mistakenly went to man's home

A Massachusetts man is facing charges after police said he fatally shot a 15-year-old boy who mistakenly knocked on his Chicopee door believing it was a friend's home.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni on Sunday said 42-year-old Jeffrey Lovell was charged with murder.

Police said they were called to a Chicopee home just before 1 p.m. Saturday, on a report of a break and enter in progress. When they arrived, responding officers discovered the victim with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Detectives determined the victim and a friend were drinking alcohol nearby and became disoriented. They knocked on Lovell's door believing it was a friend's home. Police said Lovell retrieved his firearm and fired a single shot when a pane of glass broke.

Lovell is scheduled to be arraigned Monday. It's unclear whether he has a lawyer.
