Man Convicted in 1985 Police Shooting Deaths Paroled

A man convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting deaths of two Springfield, Massachusetts, police officers in 1985 is getting out of prison next week.

The state Parole Board tells The Republican newspaper that 51-year-old Juan Ortiz is scheduled to be released Tuesday. The board voted 4-2 in January 2013 to grant parole to Ortiz after he expressed remorse and took responsibility. He's moving to Illinois, where he will be on parole for life, and subject to a return to prison in Massachusetts if he violates parole conditions.

Officers Alain Beauregard and Michael Schiavina were shot during a traffic stop. Ortiz's brother, Eduardo, was determined to be the gunman but Juan Ortiz was convicted under the state's joint venture law. Eduardo Ortiz killed himself hours after the shootings.
