Man Convicted of Trying to Kill Ex-Girlfriend and Her Mother

A Providence, Rhode Island, man has been convicted of trying to kill his estranged girlfriend and her mother.

Thirty-three-year-old Francisco Diaz was found guilty Friday by a Superior Court jury after fewer than three hours of deliberations.

The prosecution says Diaz went to his estranged girlfriend's parents' home April 23, 2014, and forced his way into the house.

Once inside, Diaz shot the mother of his former girlfriend in the upper chest. He attempted to shoot his former girlfriend in the head at close range, but the gun failed to fire.

Diaz fled the scene. He was later apprehended by police in New York City.

A message left for Diaz's attorney seeking comment on the trial was not immediately returned.

The Attorney General's office says a date for sentencing has not been set.
