Man Critical After Driving off Bridge Abutment, Droping 60 Feet

Lt. Derek Borek says the crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. Wednesday

State police say a Rhode Island man was hospitalized in critical condition after he drove off a bridge abutment in Johnston and his vehicle dropped 60 feet below.

Lt. Derek Borek says the crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. Wednesday as the victim was traveling along Interstate 295 South.

Borek says the man's car left the roadway's high-speed lane, drove onto the highway median and flipped before careening off the abutment. The vehicle landed below on Greenville Avenue, but no other cars were involved in the crash.

The victim, who wasn't identified pending notification of family, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital. He was reported as conscious at the hospital around 9 a.m.

It's unknown what caused the man to drive off the highway. An investigation is ongoing.
