Man Critically Injured When Struck by Pickup

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says 59-year-old Stephen Carpenter was struck at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

A Standish, Maine, man has been taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries after he was struck by a pickup truck while out walking.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says 59-year-old Stephen Carpenter was struck at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

He was struck on Middle Jam Road by a pickup driven by 50-year-old Glenn Miles, of Windham, who swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and lost control.

Carpenter was thrown into the woods.

Miles struck a tree and was trapped in his vehicle. He was hospitalized with injuries not considered life threatening.

The vehicle that Miles tried to avoid left the scene.

The crash remains under investigation and police are searching for the other vehicle. Investigators say speed and alcohol appear to be factors.
