A 25-year-old Vermont man will serve at least eight years behind bars for breaking into the Newport City Police Department's evidence locker and stealing drugs and guns.
The Caledonian Record reports 20-year-old Mikeal Rivers pleaded no contest Tuesday in Orleans Superior Court to burglary, obstructing justice and other charges stemming from the February 2015 evidence theft.
Rivers also pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges in connection with a November 2014 burglary spree.
Prosecutors say Rivers entered the Newport City Municipal Building's basement through an unsecured door on Feb. 8, 2015. Once inside, Rivers stole two handguns and 52 bags of heroin.
Rivers accepted a deal with prosecutors in exchange for the pleas that capped his potential sentencing for the crimes at eight to 25 years in prison.
