Man Dies After Jumping Into Water From Cliffs

Preliminary autopsy determines he died of blunt force trauma

Police say a Shelburne man has died after jumping 70 feet into Lake Champlain from the cliffs of Red Rocks Park in South Burlington, Vermont.

Police say 41-year-old Michael O. Hansen died Monday evening.

Emergency crews responded to a call of a possible drowning off the park's western cliffs around 7 p.m. CPR was performed on the man and he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An initial investigation has determined the man jumped about 70 feet from the cliffs to the water below. He was seen swimming slowly afterward, but when others reached him he was unresponsive.

Police say a preliminary autopsy determined that he died of blunt force trauma from the impact with the water.
