A 22-year-old Maine man is in custody facing charges he assaulted a state police dog.

Andrew Leeman of Westbrook faces charges of assault, refusing to submit to arrest, interference with a law enforcement dog, and animal cruelty. State police say they apprehended Leeman near the Buxton-Hollis town line on Friday.

Police say Leeman faced warrants for his arrest for violation of bail conditions and operating after revocation. State police used the dog to apprehend Leeman after he fled from officers.

A York County Jail spokeswoman says Leeman remains in custody at the jail on $1,000 cash bail. A jail spokesman says he appeared in court on Friday and his next court date has yet to be set. He also faces charges for absconding from probation in Florida.
