Man Gets 13 Months for Campaign Donation Scam

Daniel Monteiro admitted to participating in a scheme to conceal the origin of contributions that roll-your-own smoke shop owners were making

A Connecticut man who served as a conduit for a campaign donation from tobacco shop owners to Christopher Donovan's 5th District congressional campaign has been sentenced to 13 months in prison.

The Hartford Courant reports 36-year-old Daniel Monteiro pleaded guilty in March 2013 to a conspiracy to make false statements to the Federal Election Commission and defraud the U.S. government.

Monteiro admitted to participating in a scheme to conceal the origin of contributions that roll-your-own smoke shop owners were making to Donovan in 2012. Monteiro agreed to donate $2,500 to Donovan's campaign and accept the same amount in return from the donors.

The contributions were directed to Donovan with the hopes of him stopping legislation that would tax roll-your-own tobacco businesses. Donovan was never charged.
